Best bet of the day….
3:25, Sussex Stakes, Group 1, Canford Cliffs, Win. Quite frankly this is a decent race. It all depends if Rip Van Winkle is back to his best, he certainly will need to improve on what we saw last time out, but assuming we see the Rip Van Winkle that we saw last year then we are also likely to see a great race. Aidan O’Brien did say that Rip Van Winkle was short of fitness when running in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. So 43 days later we can assume he is back to full fitness, he probably wouldn’t run if he wasn’t and he will have to beat the excellent Canford Cliffs, who I really like. The Irish Guineas and the St James Palace Stakes winner now faces his elders but as did Rip Van Winkle last year when he beat Paco Boy. The three year-old gets a lot of weight from Rip Van Winkle. Just how good is Canford Cliffs?
Richard Hannon thinks Canford Cliffs is exceptional. The best miler he has ever trained he has said, so we can assume he is faster then Paco Boy (who could have run here). Premio Loco is a very good horse and could figure, but from what I have seen I think Canford Cliffs will win, unless Rip Van Winkle is back to the top of his form, it will be a ready win for Canford Cliffs in the Sussex Stakes.
Next Best….
2:45 King Torus, Win. This is a two year-old race so that means Richard Hughes and Richard Hannon hold all the aces. King Torus was a ready winner at Newmarket last time out and with two wins from three starts and a rating of 104 I think this is the one to beat. Sir Robert Ogden has some nice horses running under both codes and this could be yet another of those to win a big race in his pink colours.
